What is Tomatis?
- Tomatis is a sound based therapy that takes an individual through the stages of listening development to retrain the ears to tune into the sounds of language. This is done through the use of highly specialized equipment that filters the music so that the listener hears a concentrated and emphasized amount of high frequencies.
- The method utilizes the filtered music of Mozart and Gregorian Chants to strengthen the muscles of the middle ear, making an individual more able to attend and tune into language while simultaneously tuning out background sounds. As one’s listening and attending skills improve, so too does their ability to learn.
|
Who Can It Help?
- The Tomatis Method can help children and adults improve their ability to listen. It is possible to have normal hearing and still have listening difficulties. Hearing is the passive reception of sound, while listening is the ability to analyze and interpret the sounds for meaning. Many individuals may seem like they don’t hear well, but they are just not able to listen or tune into the sounds in another’s voice. They have a listening problem.
- Children and adults with learning difficulties or developmental delays, including:
- Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome

Frequently Asked Questions
- What will my child do during the 2 hours?
- The children can participate in a variety of activities in our clinic. The headphones are attached to the equipment with long wires, allowing the children to move about the room freely. Various toys, games and sensory items are available for use throughout the listening session.
- Will my child keep the headphones on?
- It may take a day or two for some children to keep the headphones on for the entire session. The majority of children quickly accommodate to the headphones and enjoy listening to Mozart.
- How long will it be before I see changes?
- This is different for every child. Some children show change within the first 15 days of listening, others it may take 2 or even 3 loops of listening for differences to be observed. You need to give the program time to work – it is not a CURE – it is a process that can enhance/improve your child’s abilities and regulate the way he/she responds sound information.
