Baker Academy

Opened in 2002, Baker Academy is a unique school comprised of 90 special education students, many from Buffalo Public Schools. Baker Academy offers structured educational services in a 6:1:1 (student/teacher/aide) ratio classroom setting for children and youth ages 5 to 21 years, who experience serious emotional or behavioral challenges. Through a highly structured therapeutic environment, the Academy provides a positive experience as it blends educational services and skill building programs, focusing on self-esteem and the strengths of each student.

Staff are trained in the use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI). TCI is a crisis prevention and intervention model developed by Cornell University. TCI is designed to provide staff with skills, knowledge and confidence to deal with children in crisis.

Baker Academy has implemented Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS), a team-based approach in the development of strategies and programs that are designed to help students increase academic performance by reducing problem behaviors. PBIS is a guide for developing school-wide, group and individual intervention plans.
